More and more attention is devoted to the study of the effect of nanoparticles (NPs) on cell lines having potential application in medicine. My projects analyze the effect of NPs of different shape and composition on different cell types, including cells of the main sites of interaction between the NPs and the body: endothelial cells, macrophages, intestinal cells and nervous cells. Among the NPs that are studied there are the liposomes, which have raised considerable interest both as a model of the biological membrane is as transporters of active molecules, and their use in the study of neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's, will provide information for the development of new therapies. Other tested NPs are composed of silica in different form (porous / non-porous, spherical / elongated), from iron, gold and other materials. Following treatment with the NPs I analyze the cellular response in terms of cytotoxicity and alteration of intracellular signal transduction pathways induced by particular stimuli.

Teaching activity includes: tutor of Dentistry course, Biotechnologies course and Biochemistry course, School of Medicine, University of Milano-Bicocca.
Dr Cazzaniga developed a deep knowledge and know how in cellular culture, in particular neuronal culture, and rat primary hippocampal neurons preparation.
The research topics of Dr. Cazzaniga are:
- the structure and function of biological membrane and, in specific, the study of particular domains called lipid rafts;
- the role of plasma membrane in the cell response to amyloid beta peptide;
- the biocompatibility of nanoparticles and their potential application in disease therapy or diagnosis.
